This is according to the Administration of the Judiciary Bill, 2018 passed by Parliament during today’s plenary sitting.
Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda proposed that the Chief Justice and the Deputy should have full benefits and other judicial officers get 80% of their benefits when they retire.
The Attorney General, William Byaruhanga defended the pay for retiring judicial officers on basis of the style of life they live and the age at which they retire which is 65-70 years.
He said that this payment to retiring judicial officers would motivate them and not get worried of fuel bills and other requirements after retiring.
The Chief Justice and Deputy will retire with 100% of their benefits as they were while serving.
Judges of Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court Judges, Principal Judge and Magistrates shall get 80% as they retire.
The Chief Justice and Deputy are also shall be entitled to a monthly retirement benefit equivalent to the salary payable to a sitting Chief Justice for life.
The Chief Justice and the Deputy will further get a one- off lump sum retirement benefit equivalent to 24% of the annual salary.
The benefits for burial arrangements in the judiciary will go to only the Chief justice and deputy Chief Justice, principal judge and judges of the Supreme Court.
The serving judicial officers who are being guarded will also retire with their security.
