Parliament has approved an additional UGSHS. 100bn for Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to recruit staff and improve on its revenue collection performance.
The additional UGSHS. 100bn will increase the tax body’s operation budget from UGSHS.436bn to UGSHS 536bn.
According, to John Musinguzi the Commissioner General of URA, parliament’s support to URA will enable them to collect more revenue ,become efficient and also look out for tax evaders . He said that URA intends to open 600 new staff in the authority who will include accountants , tax assessors , IT experts and tax collectors.
So far there are only 1.7M tax payers in Uganda from a population of an estimated 45M people . Experts have called upon URA to widen the tax base so that they don’t tax the same people all the time.
