President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni while today while addressing African Chief Justices at the Southern and Eastern Chief Justices’ Forum Conference in Kampala stressed that while justice can be pursued amidst poverty, economic stability greatly eases the process.
“If the economy of the country is growing and creating prosperity, it is easier to work on issues of justice,” President Museveni said.
He highlighted education’s crucial role in justice administration, promoting enlightenment and dispelling superstition.
“Education will cause enlightenment where people will get more information because some of the tensions in society are caused by lack of knowledge,” he explained.
President Museveni cautioned against past African leaders’ philosophical and ideological mistakes that hindered development.
He emphasized Uganda’s shift from identity-based politics to interest-based politics, fostering prosperity.
“We told our people that Uganda is more important to you than your tribe if you want prosperity,” he noted.
The President urged Chief Justices to integrate European and African justice ideas for comprehensive accountability.
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo welcomed the conference, attended by over 16 countries, aiming to enhance access to justice.
The forum’s chairperson, Hon. Justice Bheki Maphalala, thanked President Museveni for hosting the conference and praised Uganda’s judicial improvements.
Justice Mike Chibita highlighted the forum’s goals, including addressing case backlogs and leveraging technology for efficient judicial processes.
