ASARECA Embattled Executive Director Dismissed Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
By The Public Lens
The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) has taken decisive action against its Executive Director, Dr. Enock Warinda, dismissing him from his position due to allegations of sexual misconduct.
Warinda’s termination follows a thorough investigation into claims of inappropriate behavior towards a female staff member, which prompted several others to come forward with similar complaints.
The allegations led to Warinda’s indefinite suspension last month, pending the outcome of the investigation.
A unanimous verdict by the ASARECA Board, led by Acting Chair Dr. Kipyego Cheluget, resulted in Warinda’s dismissal to protect the organization’s integrity.
Warinda had served as ASARECA’s Executive Director since January 2022, initially taking the role as interim ED in April 2021.
However, his tenure took a drastic turn on September 6, 2024, when allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, leading to his suspension.
Despite Warinda’s denial of the accusations, the board found his defense insufficient and unconvincing.
“The ASARECA Board is committed to upholding ethical standards and ensuring a safe work environment,” a source revealed.
In the wake of Warinda’s dismissal, the board has appointed Dr. Sylvester Dickson Baguma as interim Executive Director.
Baguma, a seasoned expert from the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), will focus on restoring confidence in ASARECA and addressing any disruptions caused by Warinda’s departure.
With over 20 years of experience working with ASARECA, Baguma is well-equipped to lead the organization forward.
ASARECA’s swift action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a healthy, safe, and respectful work environment for all employees.
The organization remains dedicated to advancing agricultural research and development in Eastern and Central Africa.
