Land Grabbing Scandal: Rukiga Deputy RDC Remanded to Prison

In a shocking turn of events, Kamuntu Semakula Ivan, also known as Majambere, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rukiga, has been arraigned in court and remanded to prison over allegations of land grabbing.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) brought Majambere before the Gomba Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 21, 2024, to face charges of Conspiracy to Defraud, Stealing Cattle, and Criminal Trespass.
The allegations stem from August 2023, when Majambere and his accomplices violently seized a 300-acre farmland in Gomba District, belonging to 75-year-old Frank Rushanganwa.
Mzee Rushanganwa has held a certificate of title for the land since 2003, but Majambere claims to have purchased part of the land from his co-accused, Mwesigye, in 2020.
However, Mwesigye failed to present proof of his purchase, and the duo sold portions of the land to unsuspecting individuals to consolidate their illegal occupation.
During the incident, Majambere and his accomplices stole 157 cows valued at Shs318M and transported them to an unknown location.
Despite a court-issued eviction order in March 2024, Majambere and his co-accused continued to threaten the legitimate owner, Mzee Rushanganwa, prompting SH-ACU’s intervention.
Majambere has been remanded until December 3, 2024.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of land grabbing in Uganda, with officials sometimes being implicated in such scandals.
