Haji Faruk Kirunda, Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilization, has defended President Museveni’s decision to support a group of prostitutes in Mbale City with Shs100m.
Kirunda emphasized that the prostitutes are a vulnerable group forced into this work due to economic hardship and peer pressure, and they require decent means to earn a livelihood.
According to Kirunda, the support will enable them to quit the illegal venture and join the open economy, similar to other Ugandans supported under various programs such as PDM, Emyooga, YLP, and UWEP.
He believes that the President’s gesture is in line with his gospel of prosperity, which aims to support neglected categories of Ugandans.
Kirunda’s statement comes after President Museveni extended the support to the group during the Bugisu Youth Symposium on December 20, 2024.
The move has received mixed reactions from Ugandans, with some critics arguing that the President supported an “illegal” business. However, Kirunda maintains that there is no contradiction or harm in the President’s gesture.
