Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Director for Mobilisation, has praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his efforts in equipping Kampala’s youth with practical skills.
“Kampala residents should be wise and vote for NRM and President Museveni in 2026. As a mobiliser of NRM, I am here to remind you all that we should be grateful to President Museveni for skilling the youth of this nation.”
Seninde also commended President Museveni for restoring peace in the country, which she believes is essential for building a strong economy.
The Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl / Boy Child (PISGBC) has been a game-changer for many young people in Kampala. The initiative provides vocational training in various fields, including electronics, embroidery, and carpentry.
Dr. Faith Mirembe Katana, the Special Presidential Assistant on Skilling and Education, emphasized the importance of taking advantage of Uganda’s huge population to create a vast market for local products.
“We should create world-class products that can compete on the global market and export them to countries like China, instead of just importing Chinese products.”
The Mulago Skilling Centre, one of the nine centres under the PISGBC, has registered impressive results. With 783 students registered for exams, the centre has become a beacon of hope for many young people.
Dan Muhire, a 32-year-old student at the centre, shared his story of transformation. “Before I joined the skilling programme, I had completed Senior Four but was idle and had no hope. Now, I can repair phones and install satellite dishes, earning up to sh30,000 from phone repairs.”
Other students, like Patricia Sylvia and Prossy Nakuti, have also benefited from the programme. They created a fridge from plywood, complete with a deep freezer section, using unwanted materials and copper cooling tubes.
Martha Atuhaire, an embroidery student, chose to join the skilling centre after completing her university degree. Despite the daily commute, she believes the programme is a step in the right direction for her career.
The Mulago centre guild president, Michael Bamwine, showcased a smart electric switch that can be activated using a smartphone app. Ms. Norah Namanya, the trainer of Recycling and Value Addition, highlighted the importance of recycling tyres to create usable items and manage inorganic waste.
As the PISGBC continues to empower Uganda’s youth, it’s clear that President Museveni’s skilling initiative is bearing fruit. With thousands of young people benefiting from the programme, Uganda’s future looks brighter than ever.
