Electoral Commission Sets Date for Dokolo By-election

Dokolo-Uganda; The Uganda Independent Electoral commission has set March 21, 2024 date for the Dokolo Woman Parliamentary election.

This parliamentary seat became vacant following the demise of Cecilia Atim Ogwal Dokolo former woman member of parliament on January 18, 2024 from India where she had gone to seek medical treatment. 

The date was announced during stakeholders with the electoral commission at Dokolo Technical School.  

Justice Simon Buyumaka Mugenzi , the chairperson of Electoral Commission while releasing the roadmap leading to the by-election said because of the shortest period remaining, the body has set only one week for campaign which he asked the candidates comply with since this a by-election.   

He further explained circumstances for one week camping, I known some candidate may complain about the time but it within the law that, when a member of parliament die or resign, ‘’Electoral commission is supposed to conduct an election within 90 days and in this case we were sworn in office when some days has passed and we have to act within the legal ground. 

In the road map, updating voters’ register has begun on February 12, 2024 up to 15th February, 2024 Thursday while nomination excise is scheduled for March 11, 2024   to March, 12 2024. 

The roadmap has also included the election of some councilors for loin Dokolo District whose occupants were other dead or resigned from Office.   

This roadmap, however, has been welcomed by some of the aspirants while calls for adjustment. 

Dr. Rose Mary Alwoc one of the aspirants, also an elder to the former Mp late Atim Ogwal said she has no issue with the road since it matter of legality. 

She thanked the electoral for the releasing the road map to allow them participate in the election. 

In her reaction, the national Unity Platform Candidate, Ageno Harriet Nenidiro said the date is not free and fair to them. 

Her counterpart, Betrice Akello is also on the same page with the electoral commission though she raised that It won’t give them chance interact freely with voters. 

 

Meanwhile, Dokolo District Resident Commissioner, Musaba Ismail appealed community to embrace peace as they prepare for polling. 

He added, as security team they will ensure peace and security during the electoral process. 

He appealed to all parties to be nonviolence as the carry their mobilization.
