Empowering Women, Transforming Teso: MPs Urge Active Participation in Wealth Creation
By The Public Lens
Members of Parliament from the Teso sub-region have issued a clarion call to women in the region to actively engage in wealth creation programs.
Speaking during a women’s conference in Katakwi, the MPs emphasized the critical role women play in community development and economic transformation.
Bosco Okiror, MP for Usuk and Chairperson of the Teso Parliamentary Group, noted that women are the backbone of rural economies and empowering them would result in tangible improvements.
Okiror encouraged women to take advantage of government initiatives like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme.
Jacquiline Amongin, EALA MP and former Ngora District Woman MP, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the support of local leaders in guiding women to access funds and training opportunities.
Amongin underscored the importance of financial literacy and the need for women to engage in organized groups to benefit from such programs.
Several women shared their success stories from engaging in local wealth creation initiatives, particularly under the UWEP.
However, challenges such as limited access to credit facilities, low awareness of government programs, and cultural barriers were also noted.
Jacinta Atuto, Kapelebyong District Woman MP, urged local government leaders, NGOs, and other stakeholders to join hands in sensitizing women about available opportunities.
Atuto pledged to work closely with women groups to ensure their participation in decision-making processes at all levels of governance.
The MPs reiterated that empowering women is essential for the region’s economic growth and that by equipping them with necessary resources, Teso can become a model for rural transformation in Uganda.
