Landslide Wreaks Havoc in Bududa District Amid Relentless Rains

A devastating landslide has struck five sub-counties in Uganda’s Bududa District, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The disaster, triggered by continuous heavy rains in the Bugisu region, occurred overnight and affected the sub-counties of Bufuma, Nametsi, Bumayoka, Lutsekhe, and Bundesi.
Milton Kamoti, the Bududa District LCV chairperson, confirmed that six homes have been buried under the rubble, along with crops of maize, bananas, and coffee. Fortunately, no lives have been lost.
However, the landslide has blocked the major Nametsi-Mabono road, cutting off access to Bufuma Health Center III.
A massive rock from the national park has obstructed the road, leaving residents without access to essential health services.
“As the rains continue to pour down, people are unable to access health services due to the blocked road,” Kamoti noted.
Patrick Nabutanyo, the acting Bududa district communication officer, has compiled a report on the disaster and submitted it to the Ministry of Disaster.
He urged residents living in disaster-prone areas to seek temporary shelter in nearby churches and schools.
This latest landslide raises concerns about the government’s relocation efforts.
Previously, the government had compensated each household with 16 million shillings to relocate from disaster-risk areas to the Bunambutye resettlement area in Bulambuli.
However, some residents opted to return to their original homes.
The Bududa District has experienced numerous landslides in recent years, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
The government’s response to these disasters has been criticized, with some arguing that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable communities.
