NIRA Urges Accuracy in National ID Registration
By The Public Lens
The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has cautioned Ugandans against providing false information during national ID registration.
NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo, emphasized the importance of accuracy, noting that falsification of information is an offense punishable by imprisonment.
The ongoing registration process aims to issue 17.2 million new IDs and renew 15.8 million expiring ones.
Kisembo highlighted past instances where false information, particularly age, affected individuals’ eligibility for benefits like SAGE funds.
The exercise includes new registrations, renewals, first-time IDs for 16-year-olds with National Identification Numbers (NIN), lost ID replacements, and changes to existing particulars.
A UGX 666.85 billion budget was approved for the Mass Enrolment and Renewal Exercise, covering new systems, blank cards, administration costs, and registration assistant allowances.
Between August 24, 2024, and January 30, 2025, approximately 3.4 million IDs are set to expire.
However, the Minister of Internal Affairs has extended the validity of national ID cards by one year, ensuring existing IDs remain usable until replaced.
