Museveni Appoints Prof. Moses Muhwezi as Substantive Principal of Makerere University Business School

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Prof. Moses Muhwezi as the substantive principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), bringing an end to nearly 17 months of uncertainty at the institution.
Muhwezi’s appointment, signed on November 3, 2024, is for a five-year term, effective immediately. “I, Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, do hereby appoint Muhwezi Moses (prof) on local contract as principal of Makerere University Business School for five years with effect from the date of assumption of duty,” the instrument reads.
This development comes after intense lobbying by students and staff for a substantive principal to be appointed, citing the need for stability and continuity.
Albert Arinda, vice chairman of the Makerere University Business Academic Staff Association (MUBASA), praised Muhwezi’s contributions to strengthening MUBS during his interim leadership.
Brain Muyomba, a lecturer at MUBS, welcomed Muhwezi’s confirmation, noting that it has averted a potential leadership crisis.
With Muhwezi’s contract as deputy principal nearing its end, the institution risked facing a leadership vacuum.
Muhwezi becomes only the second principal in MUBS’ 28-year history, following Prof. Wasswa Balunywa’s tenure since the institution’s establishment in 1997.
Background on Prof. Muhwezi
Prof. Muhwezi brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He was appointed acting deputy principal of MUBS in 2014 and confirmed as substantive deputy principal in 2019.
Previously, he served as dean of the Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Business Administration and led the Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management and the Department of Management Science.
Muhwezi holds a PhD in Public Procurement from the University of Twente, Netherlands, and multiple other qualifications.
He is also a member of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (MCIPS) and the Institute of Public Procurement Professionals in Uganda (IPPU).
MUBS at a Glance
Makerere University Business School was established in 1997 through the merger of Makerere’s Faculty of Commerce and the National College of Business Studies (NCBS).
In 2000, MUBS gained financial and administrative autonomy, and in 2001, it became a public tertiary institution affiliated with Makerere University.
