Uganda’s Coffee Revival: A Billion-Dollar Success Story
By The Public Lens
Uganda’s coffee industry is buzzing with excitement as the country’s coffee exports hit a record-breaking USD 1.14 billion in the Financial Year 2023/24.
This impressive feat marks a 6.33% increase from the previous financial year, making it the highest revenue generated from coffee exports in 30 years.
The driving force behind this success is attributed to the government’s unwavering support and empowerment of coffee farmers through initiatives like Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and the ‘Omwanyi Telemba campaigns’ in the Buganda subregion.
These efforts have led to the distribution of over 107 million coffee seedlings to farmers, resulting in a significant increase in coffee production.
Uganda’s coffee exports have risen to 6.13 million bags, surpassing the 5.8 million bags exported in FY 2022/23, which earned USD 846 million.
In June 2024 alone, Uganda exported an impressive 667,037 kg of coffee valued at USD 162.36 million, contributing substantially to the annual total.
President Yoweri Museveni’s vision to boost Uganda’s coffee production and increase its global market share is taking shape, with the rationalization of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) under the Ministry of Agriculture.
This strategic move aims to enhance the coffee value chain and propel Uganda towards its ambitious goal of hitting USD 1.5 billion in coffee exports by 2030.
As Uganda’s coffee industry continues to thrive, the country is poised to become a leading coffee producer globally, providing lucrative opportunities for farmers, traders, and the national economy.
