Busoga Kingdom’s Battle for Heritage: Igenge Hill Palace under Threat

The Busoga Kingdom is facing a critical challenge as a group of 30 individuals has taken Kyabazinga William Nadiope to the High Court in Kampala, claiming ownership of the land on Igenge Hill, Bugembe Ward, in Jinja North City Division.
This land is home to the Kyabazinga’s official palace, a multi-billion structure, and the International Institute of Technology.
According to Joseph Muvawala, the Busoga Prime Minister, the claimants are seeking court orders to reclaim the property, which could lead to the demolition of the iconic palace and institute if their claims are upheld.
“The kingdom is prepared to defend its ownership rights over this land,” Dr. Muvawala affirmed, emphasizing that the land belongs to the institution of Isebantu Kyabazinga wa Busoga.
Igenge Hill holds significant cultural and historical importance for the Busoga Kingdom, symbolizing the unity of the 11 chiefdoms that make up the Busoga region.
The land was officially designated as the site for the Kyabazinga’s palace in the early 20th century, serving as a traditional seat of power for the Kyabazinga.
Over the decades, the palace has been a residence for the Kyabazinga and a central venue for cultural ceremonies, royal events, and educational initiatives.
The International Institute of Technology is also located on this land, showcasing the kingdom’s commitment to education and development.
The palace itself has undergone significant renovations, with the government of Uganda contributing to its restoration.
In 2022, Kyabazinga William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV officially occupied the palace after six years of renovation.
The potential demolition of the palace would not only be a loss for the Busoga Kingdom but also for the cultural heritage of Uganda.
The kingdom’s determination to defend its ownership rights highlights the importance of preserving cultural and historical sites.
