Over 4,200 State House- Sponsored Students Set to Graduate with Vocational Skills
After six months of intensive hands-on training, 4,201 students sponsored by State House under the Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl/Boy Child (PISGBC) are preparing to sit for their Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) exams.
The assessment will take place in all nine skilling centers in Kampala, marking a significant milestone in the students’ journey toward acquiring practical and employable skills.
According to Mr. Dan Wejuli, State House official in charge of planning and welfare for the PISGBC project, the students have undergone rigorous training in various vocational courses, including welding, metal fabrication, leather designing, and more.
Upon completing their training, each student will receive a certificate equivalent to the Uganda Certificate of Education (O’Level), empowering them to earn a decent living and improve their livelihoods.
The initiative, launched in 2017 by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, aims to reduce unemployment among less privileged youths by equipping them with practical skills.
Dr. Faith Katana Mirembe, Special Presidential Assistant on Skilling and Education, commended KCCA for providing free space for the skilling centers, saying, “This space is free; Subway and Luzira are also free. We do not pay rent for it. We thank KCCA for this free space.”
Dr. Hillary Musoke Kisanja, Senior Presidential Advisor on Agribusiness, praised State House for the project, highlighting its positive impact on the livelihoods of Kampala’s youth.
Ms. Sheillah Birungi, KCCA’s Director of Gender, Youth, and Production, noted that skilling has empowered young women, making them productive, and pledged to support the establishment of a new skilling center in Busega.
As the students prepare to graduate, they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen vocations, marking a significant step toward reducing unemployment and improving livelihoods in Uganda.
