Uganda’s premier university earns top spot in East Africa and eighth in Sub-Saharan Africa, marking a major comeback in global higher education
Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and most iconic institution of higher learning, has once again reaffirmed its position as the intellectual powerhouse of East Africa.
In the newly released 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Makerere was named the top university in East Africa, placing in the 801–1,000 band globally and ranking eighth in Sub-Saharan Africa, a feat that solidifies its leadership beyond national borders.
The announcement marks a triumphant rebound for the institution — affectionately called “The Ivory Tower” — which had briefly slipped in the 2025 rankings due to data discrepancies.
A Symbol of Resilience and Excellence
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday at the University’s Main Building, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarah Ssali expressed pride in the milestone, calling it a reflection of Makerere’s unwavering pursuit of academic and research excellence.
“It gives me great pleasure to share with our stakeholders and the general public that Makerere University has been ranked Number One in the East African region,” said Prof. Ssali.
She described the recognition as “a testament to Makerere’s resilience, excellence, and continued pursuit of transformative education.”
Makerere’s overall score stood at 37.2, nearly double the East African average of 18.8. The university’s strongest indicators were Research Quality (54.2%) and International Outlook (69.7%), both key parameters used by THE to assess global competitiveness.
This performance places Makerere ahead of peer institutions such as the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), which were ranked in the 1,501+ band.
A New Era of Research for Impact
Experts attribute Makerere’s rise to a strategic realignment of its research priorities, improved data systems, and sustained government investment in higher education.
Assoc. Prof. Robert Wamala, Director of the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, credited the government’s growing commitment to academic research as a key driver of progress.
“The Government of Uganda now provides up to UGX 30 billion annually for dedicated research funding,” he said.
He noted that the university has shifted from “research for publication” to “research for impact” — a deliberate move to ensure that innovations directly address Uganda’s and Africa’s development challenges.
Makerere is now home to over 68 centers of excellence and is affiliated with more than 80 per cent of all Ph.D. holders in Uganda, underscoring its central role in shaping national intellectual capital.
Transforming the Student Experience
Beyond academic output, Makerere’s recent reforms have also focused on student-centered innovation.
Prof. Julius Kikooma, Director of Graduate Training, said the university’s progress was bolstered by the digitalization of key administrative systems, including a fully automated admissions platform.
“The process is now faster, more transparent, and more student-friendly,” Kikooma said.
He added that Makerere has introduced year-round rolling applications for research-based programs and dual-degree partnerships with leading universities abroad — initiatives designed to make postgraduate education more flexible and globally competitive.
Recovery and Data Transparency
The university’s resurgence follows a minor drop in the 2025 rankings due to what officials described as “data capture issues.”
According to Dr. Cyprian Misinde, Director of Quality Assurance, the institution worked swiftly to address those gaps, ensuring that accurate and verifiable data was submitted for the 2026 rankings.
“If you look across East Africa, no other university is within the 801–1,000 band,” Misinde said.
He described the achievement as evidence of Makerere’s commitment to continuous improvement, accountability, and international benchmarking.
Global University with Local Roots
Makerere’s international reputation continues to expand through robust collaborations and academic partnerships.
Mathias Ssemanda, Manager for International Outlook, revealed that the university currently maintains over 725 active Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions across the world.
Among its high-profile collaborations are partnerships in health sciences with Johns Hopkins University and in agriculture with Michigan State University and Penn State University.
“These partnerships enable Makerere to contribute meaningfully to global research while ensuring that our innovations serve the needs of African communities,” Ssemanda said.
Such collaborations also strengthen Uganda’s position in the global knowledge economy and attract international scholars and students to the country.
The Broader Landscape of African Higher Education
Globally, the University of Oxford maintained its top position for the tenth consecutive year, while in Sub-Saharan Africa, the rankings were dominated by South African universities — with the University of Cape Town retaining the regional No. 1 spot.
Makerere’s placement as eighth in the region is widely seen as a breakthrough for universities outside Southern Africa, reaffirming Uganda’s role as a leader in knowledge production and policy research.
Education analysts note that Makerere’s consistency in global rankings highlights the success of Uganda’s higher education reforms, particularly those emphasizing research funding, academic integrity, and performance-based evaluation.
A Beacon of East African Scholarship
Founded in 1922, Makerere University has evolved from a small technical college into one of Africa’s most respected centers of learning. It has educated generations of leaders, including several African presidents, and continues to serve as a beacon of scholarship, innovation, and social transformation.
As the university prepares to celebrate its 104th anniversary next year, its leadership says the renewed recognition will inspire even greater ambition.
“We will continue to raise the bar,” Prof. Ssali said, “because Makerere’s mission is not just to be number one in East Africa — but to compete among the best universities in the world.”
