Days after fellow Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) warned him to go slow, Eric Sakwa, President Yoweri Museveni’s representative in Jinja District, has been arrested by Lt Col Edith Nakalema’s State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
A former confrontational Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) youth winger, hired as RDC on recommendation of former Presidency Minister Frank Tumwebaze, Sakwa has been accused of highhandedness in his implementation of President Museveni’s Covid19 lockdown and curfew directives.
Recently, there have been many complaints against the RDC. For example, a family of a man reportedly tortured by Sakwa refused to bury him after he succumbed to injuries sustained from the torment until Museveni has dealt with his cruel appointee.
As RDC, Sakwa was notorious for using his office to deal with those he disagreed with as he wished. Weeks ago, he was accused of hiring goons to beat MP Robert Kyagulanyi ally Pastor Andrew Muwanguzi after a confrontation on a local radio station. Muwanguzi alleged that about 10 security operatives wielding guns and sticks had beaten him and bundled him into a Super Custom vehicle hours after the stormy show. Muwanguzi further claimed that Sakwa was seated in the same car his attackers threw him into and drove him to Nalufenya.
Months earlier, Sakwa had blocked opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s meetings saying the People’s Government President was unwelcome to Jinja.
Days ago, RDC Moses Nuwagaba warned Sakwa to remember that criminal liability was personal.
And today, Sakwa was picked from Jinja’s NBS FM where he had gone for a show, taken to court where he was charged with manslaughter, causing death of Charles Isanga, and theft of waragi worth Shs400,000, malicious damage of property and torture, before he was remanded to Kirinya Prison until May 13.
