Abdu Katuntu, the MP for Bugweri, has demonstrated that it is possible to be a politician in Uganda and at the same time exhibit a high philanthropic acumen in a country where politicians have come to be associated with greed, selfishness and corruption.
While accepting that the manner in which 20m shillings was given to each of the MPs by themselves was suspect, prompting two of them to go to court to challenge the action, Katuntu withdrew the money deposited on his bank account by the Parliamentary Commission, added his own money amounting 35 million shillings, bought 23 tonnes of maize flour and surrendered it to the IgAbdu Katuntu, the MP for Bugweri, has demonstrated that it is possible to be a politician in Uganda and at the same time exhibit a high philanthropic acumen in a country where politicians have come to be associated with greed, selfishness and corruption.
While accepting that the manner in which 20m shillings was given to each of the MPs by themselves was suspect, prompting two of them to go to court to challenge the action, Katuntu withdree the money deposited on his bank account by the Parliamentary Commission, added his own money amounting 35 million shillings, bought 23 tonnes of maize flour and surrendered it to the Iganga/Bugweri Covid19 Task Force to distribute to his people of Bugweri.
His counterparts of Luuka District (Kisa of Luuka South and Bagole of Luuka North) got the money, added none of their own and afforded only 5 and 2 tonnes of maize flour respectively for their starving people, which include my wife Jane and myself.
It is true I am one of the starving old people in Luuka District trapped by Covid19 in my village of Nawaka in Ikumbya, Subcounty of North Luuka. I have not received any food yet from the Luuka District Covid19 Task Force. In fact I appeal to my brother, Abdu Katuntu to look beyond Bugweri and salvage my wife and myself from hunger. Katuntu and myself belong to the Mulawa Clan of Busoga. Any other person who cares about old people, please help while the Luuka Covid19 is tiptoeing.
Dr. Patrick Ibembe, the Mwiri Old Boys Association President, Isaac Kabongo, Mudoola Joseph and Hassy Mulawa (the FDC kingmaker in Jinja), thank you for what you have done so far to salvage me and my wife Jane from the devastating effect of hunger.
Hunger, as I intimated before, can kill citizens massively before Covid19 does. The elderly, juvenile children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. Many are starving in Luuka District.
Hungry people are not only angry but may not think effectively, yet thinking correctly is required at a time like this and beyond to revive the family, community and country.
Abdu Katuntu has set a benchmark for all other Members of Parliament to measure against. It is a very high standard of public service and empathy at this time of Covid19. Hopefully, there will be other MPs who will march the Abdullah Kantuntu benchmark. MPs include Ministers some of whom are on the National Covid19 Task Force.
