The Shs20m rejected and returned to the Parliamentary Commission by some MPs will be given to District task forces where these lawmakers come from to support their efforts in the fight against the deadly COVID-19, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga (pictured) has said.
Parliament recently passed a supplementary budget of Shs304bn, out of which Shs10bn was allocated to Parliament, with each MP given Shs20m to ostensibly help in the fight against the spread of Coronovirus in their respective constituencies.
However, some MPs protested against the way the money was included in the supplementary budget, that saw Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo Municipality) and Erute South legislator Jonathan Odur drag Parliament to court, seeking to halt the utilisation of the funds.
Karuhanga’s camp was later joined by other MPs including Fred Mwesigye (Nyabuzo County), Jaklet Atuhaire (Sheema Woman MP), Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality), Mathias Mpugga (Masaka Municipality), Amelia Kyambadde (Mawokota North) and Robert Kyagulanyi (Kyadondo East).
However, during today’s plenary sitting, Kadaga said that instead of returning the money to the treasury, Parliament decided to accord the money to respective task forces and fight against COVID-19.
She also informed Parliament about the petition from private teachers who are worried about not receiving salaries yet President Yoweri Museveni said that those on salary won’t receive relief from the government.
She said that a one Rwakabuga has petitioned her office asking for government intervention in the matter so that they also receive assistance.
