Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has gone into self-isolation after some of the people he was in contact with tested positive for Covid-19.
“Friends, I have gone into self-isolation after some of my contacts tested positive for #COVID19. My own test result is negative, however, I have taken this decision as a health recommended measure,” the Prime Minister tweeted on Friday.
This comes after the health ministry reported 35 new Covid-19 cases, raising the country’s tally of infections to 557.
“The ministry of health confirms thirty-five new COVID-19 cases from 2267 samples tested on 4th June, 2020. All cases are Ugandan,” reads a statement released on Friday morning.
“Seven of the confirmed cases are truck drivers who arrived from South Sudan via Elegu border point, two are truckers who arrived from Kenya via Busia border point while three cases are from Lira, Malaba and Orabo points of entry,” said Dr Charles Olaro, director health services in a statement posted on the Ministry of Health social media platforms.
Dr Olaro further revealed that two members of security team at Elegu border point are among the confirmed cases.
“Another confirmed case is a trucker who arrived via Ngomokomo, Gulu District. 2o of the confirmed cases are alerts and contacts to previously confirmed cases. These include; seven from Kenya, five from Amuru, three from Mayuge, two from Kyotera, one from Wakiso, one from Dokolo and another from Amolatar districts,” he added.
Relatedly, 31 foreign truckers (18 Kenyans, seven Tanzanians, four Congolese and two Burundians) have been denied entry and handed back to their respective countries of origin after testing positive for the virus.
The Health Minister, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said all were in quarantine at the time of test.
Authorities have also blocked 31 positive foreign truck driver from entering and handed them over to their country of origin.
