The Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development has handed over Mandela National Stadium Limited Nambole land titles to the Ministry of
Education and sports.
Mandela National Stadium is part of the Mandela National Stadium Limited a public liability company incorporated under the laws of Uganda with two shareholders that is the Ministry Of Education and Sports and the Ministry Of Finance.
Mandela National Stadium Limited was handed over to the government in 1987 and the land titles were issued in the names of Uganda Land Commission which holds all titles of government institutions for which that land is intended.
An inter-ministerial meeting held in July last year resolved that they transfer the land titles to Mandela National Stadium Limited following a request by the shareholders.
According to Dorcus Okalany the Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Lands Housing And Urban Development, arising from the several meetings that have been held to resolve land ownership issues by the shareholders and having received a legal opinion of the Attorney General regarding legislation of the stadium , the ministry of lands was requested by the Uganda Lands Commission to transfer the land tittles.
“Mandela National Stadium Limited is secure now, what remains now of the management of the stadium is to ensure that the land is protected from encroachers since it is strategically located and many people are eyeing it” said Okalany
While receiving the three land titles during a function held at the ministry of education and sports today, the state minister for sports
Hamson Obua said acquiring of the titles is clear evidence that Mandela National Stadium Limited is at liberty to start the process of engaging partners for purposes of development of the land.
“Today we have resolved one of the major challenges Mandela National Stadium has been facing over the years. With the land tittles available, we believe that the governance of the stadium and the management of the stadium will have to move in a more proactive manner to ensure that land earmarked for a national sports facility is protected” said minister Obua

Alex Kakooza, the permanent secretary ministry of education said following securing of the land tittles, the stadium will be renovated and upgraded to international standards.
Over the years, it has been reported that Namboole land had more than 200 encroachers who had been helped by the unavailability of the land title which in 2006, had been reported missing by the lands commission.
