Uganda, due to its system of governance which provides for fair representa8tion of all categories of people in elective positions, is the most democratic country in the world, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said.
Speaking at the celebration of International Day for Older Persons which was held at state house Entebbe, he said that Uganda’s system empowers all special interested groups to be given specials posts at all levels of elective leadership from local council to parliament.
“I am glad older persons shall be represented in the 11th Parliament as a special interest group,” the president added.
Daily News Uganda reports that referring to the International Day for Older persons, the President said that the observance of this day is an opportunity for government and the private sector to reflect on the challenges older persons continue to face and it is also a day to evaluate the measures put in place to improve the welfare of the older persons.
He added that the NRM government has put in place social protection programs which target older persons. For the first time in the history of Uganda, we have a grant for older persons. “Reaching old age alone is not enough. We are committed to creating an environment that guarantees older persons dignified lives through responsive policies and legislation,” Museveni said.
