National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Reconciliatory and pre-presidential Nomination Outreach team of the Central Executive committee (CEC) has gone out in different regions of the country ahead of the 2021 presidential nominations on a reconciliation mission with independent party-leaning candidates.
These top CEC leaders will hold meetings with the concerned parties and ensure that they have only one NRM leaning candidate in the race for the different competitive positions in parliament and local Government.
The Electoral Commission is finalizing preparations to nominate presidential aspirants on 02 and 03 November.
Results from previous general elections in the years 2011 and 2016, saw many individuals who lost party tickets, bounce back as independents in the campaigns and cruise to victory, subjecting NRM official flag bearers at the time to humiliating defeats.
Most of the independent MPs signed memorandum of understanding (MoUS) with the NRM, which paved way for them to serve in cabinet or head committees of parliament.
According to Livenewschatroom, the NRM Director for Mobilization Hon. Mathias Kasamba has said that in order to avoid a repeat of such incidences, the party has sent out teams from its top leadership organ, to carry out reconciliation and create harmony and cohesion ahead of the forthcoming national elections.
Kasamba added that the three day consultative meetings will start on Thursday 22 October, between district leaderships, flag bearers contestants, office bearers and NRM structures from the grassroots.
“We have sent teams to Central Uganda, Eastern Uganda and Western Uganda, to end the wrangles that have followed the party from its recent primaries,” said Kasamba.
Recently, political parties under the Inter-party for Organizational Dialogue (IPOD) – a platform that brings together all registered political parties with representation in parliament; expressed concern that the number of independent MPs was likely to increase in the 2021 elections.
This concern led to insertion in both the presidential elections (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and the Parliamentary Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2019 a clause that sought to either block or make it extremely difficult for independent candidates to emerge during the elections cycle.
Kasamba noted that the meetings will endeavor to have more numbers of NRM candidates make it to Parliament and Local Government councils through the electoral processes.
“As a party, we are preparing countrywide presidential nomination celebrations in line with Covid-19 restrictions. After Mr. Museveni has been nominated by the electoral Commission, he will present the NRM Manifesto officially to the nation via radio and television,” added Kasamba.
