Museveni’s Masterstroke: Former FDC Stalwart Odo Tayebwa Appointed Commissioner of Cooperatives
By Fredrick Siminyu
In a move that highlights President Yoweri Museveni’s tolerance and inclusive leadership, former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart Odo Tayebwa has been appointed as the Commissioner of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Trade, Industries, and Cooperatives.
Odo, a renowned opposition figure, represented Ishaka Municipality in the 9th Parliament before defecting to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Odo’s appointment as Commissioner of Cooperatives is a clear indication of Museveni’s willingness to engage with former opponents and leverage their expertise for the benefit of the country.
This move is not unprecedented, as current Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa also defected from FDC to join the NRM.
As Odo embarks on his new role, his experience and insight will undoubtedly enrich the Ministry of Trade, Industries, and Cooperatives.
His defection and acceptance by the NRM serves as a reminder that, even in the face of political differences, Museveni’s leadership remains committed to inclusivity and national progress.
However, Odo’s defection is a significant development in Uganda’s political landscape, showcasing the uncertain future of opposition parties and the enduring appeal of the NRM under Museveni’s leadership.
As one of the few opposition diehards least expected to abandon the struggle, Odo’s crossing is came as a testament to the NRM’s ability to attract and accommodate diverse perspectives.
“Continued disagreements in opposition reflect a sign of intolerance and selfishness by the opposition leaders. We have witnessed how FDC has disintegrated over minor issues,” said Haningtone Muhanga, a popular FDC supporter in Rukungiri district.
Muhanga attributes the NRM’s growing credibility to the opposition parties’ display of selfishness and intolerance.
