A devastating collapse of the Kiteezi Landfill in Kampala has left scores of people feared dead, with homes and livestock buried under tons of waste.
The disaster, which occurred due to a structural failure in the landfill’s waste mass, has sent shockwaves through the community, with many families searching for loved ones.
While local communities have reported retrieving several bodies from the site, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials have yet to officially confirm any fatalities.
“The extent of the damage is still under assessment. At this time, no fatalities have been officially recorded,” stated the Executive Director of KCCA in a press release.
The collapse has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the affected community, with many residents left to pick up the pieces and wonder how such a tragedy could have occurred.
The Kiteezi Landfill, located in Wakiso District, serves as the primary waste disposal site for all five divisions of Kampala, and its collapse has exposed the risks and vulnerabilities of the community living nearby.
The authorities have deployed teams to the site to take necessary measures to secure the area and prevent further incidents.
The situation remains dire, with many families awaiting news of their loved ones and the community coming to terms with the scale of the tragedy.
