Uganda Mourns the Loss of Outspoken Political Analyst Tamale Mirundi
By Fredrick Siminyu
Uganda’s political landscape has been left reeling after the sudden passing of Joseph Tamale Mirundi, a former presidential press secretary and advisor on media to President Museveni.
Mirundi, known for his sharp analysis and fearless commentary, died on Tuesday evening at the age of 60 after a long battle with illness.
Mirundi’s son revealed that his father had been in hospital for over a month, showing signs of improvement before his health condition deteriorated.
“The doctors said he had water in his lungs. They have been sucking it out. However, today his health condition deteriorated and when they tried to suck the fluid out, it was blood,” he said.
A member of the National Resistance Movement and a familiar face on Ugandan television, Mirundi was a strong advocate for the Patriotic League of Uganda civic group led by First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
He had recently paid allegiance to the group, serving as the Deputy Spokesperson for Buganda Region.
Mirundi’s career was marked by controversy, including a suspension from the “One On One” show in 2017 for using abusive language and a court case over defamation.
However, he remained a respected figure in Ugandan politics, known for his sharp analysis and predictions, including the downfall of Eric Sakwa and the rise of the People Power, Our Power party under Bobi Wine.
Mirundi is survived by his parents, Molly Namatovu and Yowana Mirundi.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
His passing has left a void in Uganda’s political landscape, with many mourning the loss of a fearless and outspoken analyst.
