Breakthrough in Era Forest Reserve Boundary Dispute
By The Public Lens
The long-standing boundary dispute between the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and the Palorinya community in Obongi district has finally been resolved, paving the way for the boundary opening of Era National Forest Reserve.
The controversy began when the community, led by LC3 chairperson Erwaga Luke, opposed the NFA’s methods, accusing them of using force to demarcate the forest boundaries without consultation .
The community also alleged that NFA staff were responsible for destroying the natural forest reserve and imposing a one million shilling fee on residents who wanted to graze their animals within the forest.
Furthermore, the Palorinya sub-county leaders claimed that the NFA disregarded a security committee resolution that emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders in the boundary opening process.
Tensions escalated, leading to the community chasing away NFA staff, who were accompanied by armed police guards.
The standoff prompted both parties to seek intervention from Obongi’s Resident District Commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka.
In response, the RDC convened an emergency security meeting, bringing together technical staff, local leaders, district officials, and NFA representatives.
Following the RDC’s mediation, the two sides agreed to collaborate on the boundary opening of Era Natural Forest Reserve, marking a significant breakthrough in the dispute.
This resolution is a crucial step towards sustainable forest management, aligning with the NFA’s mandate to manage central forest reserves while supplying high-quality forestry-related products and services.
