Busoga Region Urged to Diversify Agriculture for Enhanced Food Security
By Fredrick Siminyu
Barbara Nekesa Oundo, National Treasurer of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has emphasized the need for Busoga residents to shift from sugarcane farming to more diversified commercial agriculture to improve food security.
Sugarcane farming, she noted, has led to food insecurity in many homes, and is better suited for those with large expanses of land.
Smaller landholders should explore other lucrative and sustainable agricultural activities to maximize their land’s potential.
“I advise you to leave sugarcane farming to those with more extensive land,” Nekesa stressed. “Instead, engage in commercial agriculture and avoid fragmenting your land. Also, it’s crucial to secure your land ownership by obtaining proper titles.”
During the same event, Don Vincent Bwana, Head of Protocol in NRM and parliamentary aspirant for Luuka South, appealed to President Museveni to fulfill his promise to modernize seed schools in the district, boosting the education sector.
Additionally, the government has approved the paving of the Walugogo-Luuka-Kamuli road, with compensation for affected landowners already underway, starting from Kamuli to Nakabugu, confirmed Waibuga Sub-county Chairperson Mr. Kayong Salim.
