The rainy season is upon us, and the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a weather alert urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving.
Michael Kananura, the Traffic police spokesperson, emphasized the importance of safe driving during the rainy season, stating that it brings hazardous driving conditions, including fog, mist, heavy rainfall, flooded rains, and reduced visibility.
“To ensure safety on the roads, it is important for drivers to check vehicles, slow down, and increase visibility while driving,” Kananura said.
Motorists are cautioned against driving through flooded areas, as standing water can pose serious risks.
Kananura also emphasized the dangers of fog and mist, which can significantly reduce road visibility, making it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles, traffic signs, and pedestrians.
To reduce the risk of crashes, Kananura advised motorists to increase visibility, use headlights, and ensure windshield wipers are in good condition.
Additionally, motorists are advised to avoid overtaking, especially in poor visibility conditions.
The police emphasize that public vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial for preventing accidents during the festival season and reducing the risk of crashes.
