The Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC) is set to launch a groundbreaking price subsidy program, aimed at making clean energy more accessible and affordable for citizens across the country, especially in rural areas.
On December 2, 2024, Roy Nyamutale Baguma, the managing director of UECCC, announced that the official launch of the price subsidy program will take place on December 5, 2024, in Kiboga District.
This innovative program will offer significant discounts on various clean energy products, including energy equipment for tasks like water pumping, irrigation, refrigeration, and grain milling, which will see a 60% price reduction.
Clean cooking solutions, such as solar, briquettes, ethanol, biogas, and liquefied petroleum gas, will also be available at discounted prices, ranging from 30% to 50% depending on the technology.
For those in need of portable lighting, solar lantern prices will drop by 60%, and solar systems equipped with two lights will have a 50% discount.
According to Baguma, “We will promote this initiative nationwide to reach as many people as possible.”
He further emphasized that individuals can purchase the discounted products by simply presenting a National Identification Card, and they can take their chosen product home immediately.
The program is designed to make electricity more accessible, particularly in remote and rural areas, and is part of the Electricity Access Scale-Up Project, which is funded by the World Bank and the Government of Uganda.
To ensure the success of the program, UECCC has partnered with 67 Energy Service Companies (ESCOs), which will help provide the price discounts to the Ugandan public.
As Baguma noted, “We urge every Ugandan to embrace the program and access clean, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy.”
