Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, has called upon private schools and educational institutions to adopt the Education Management Information System (EMIS) to improve their planning.
Many private schools have not shared crucial information about their students and staff, Minister Museveni pointed out.
“We do not yet know how many teachers and academic staff they have,” she said.
Over 50% of private schools have not provided the number of learners they serve, making it difficult for the government to plan effectively.
The minister also urged private school owners to stop hiring government teachers for extra jobs.
She expressed concern that these teachers struggle to balance their duties, which can lead to lower performance in both roles.
Many government teachers take on private school jobs to earn extra money, but this practice can affect the quality of education they provide.
Private school owners discussed challenges they face, such as financial issues and regulations, during the meeting.
Minister Museveni’s call for the adoption of EMIS is part of a larger effort to modernize Uganda’s education system.
By using this system, schools can improve their planning, enhance student outcomes, and better meet the demands of today’s educational environment.
In a related development, Luwero private schools have been struggling to register learners on the EMIS portal, with over 400 schools yet to complete the registration process.
The challenges faced by these schools include lack of computer skills, privacy concerns, and poor attitude towards the registration process.
The Ministry of Education and Sports has been working to address these challenges and ensure that all schools are able to register their learners on the EMIS portal.
