President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, along with other leaders from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), convened a virtual meeting to tackle the pressing security situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Joint Summit, co-chaired by President William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere, demonstrating the regions’ commitment to collaborative action.
During the meeting, the leaders revisited the decisions made at the 1st Joint EAC-SADC summit in February 2025, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to address the deteriorating security situation in Eastern DRC.
The summit also adopted the report from the joint EAC-SADC meeting of Ministers, which outlined a roadmap for immediate, medium, and long-term implementation measures to achieve sustainable peace and security in the region.
Furthermore, the leaders directed the commencement of the implementation of the report and the roadmap, demonstrating their commitment to taking decisive action.
SADC Chairperson, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, praised the continued peace efforts by both regional organizations but expressed disappointment over the slow implementation of peace agreements, particularly in Eastern DRC .
EAC Chairperson, President William Ruto, reaffirmed the EAC’s concern about the deteriorating situation in the DRC and stressed the importance of collaborative action between the two organizations .
The leaders also expressed appreciation to the EAC and SADC Secretariat for their preparatory work leading up to the summit.
This joint effort demonstrates the regions’ commitment to addressing the complex security challenges facing Eastern DRC, and the leaders’ determination to work together to achieve sustainable peace and security.
