President Yoweri Museveni has called on cultural institutions in Buganda to uphold traditional values and foster national unity as a foundation for Uganda’s continued growth.
This message came during his official visit to Mengo, where he presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lwattamu Mall, also known as the House of Battaka.
President Museveni was warmly received by Buganda Kingdom officials, clan elders, and other traditional leaders during the event.
He took the opportunity to acknowledge the historic contributions of the Bataka (clan elders), the Balangila (princes), and the Bambeja (princesses) in shaping Uganda’s past, particularly during critical periods of national struggle.
“In our struggles against Amin and Obote, the Bataka, Balangila, and Bambeja rallied behind us,” the President recalled, underscoring the solidarity Buganda leaders demonstrated during Uganda’s liberation.
He urged the clan leaders to protect and promote Uganda’s cultural heritage, highlighting the role of language, traditional foods, and clan identities in strengthening national identity.
“Clans are fundamental to our nation and promote unity,” Museveni stated.
He encouraged the Bataka to partner with religious leaders to safeguard Uganda’s indigenous customs from being undermined by modern influences.
The President also lauded the collaborative efforts of the Balangila and Bambeja in community development and offered tangible support to further their progress.
He announced a personal donation of UGX 100 million to the Bukesa Abalangila n’Abambeja SACCO, aimed at enhancing their income-generating activities.
The Lwattamu Mall project is being constructed on land belonging to the Buganda Kingdom and symbolizes the growing cooperation between traditional institutions and the private sector.
The development is anticipated to invigorate the local economy and provide employment opportunities for surrounding communities.
President Museveni’s visit and generous contribution were widely appreciated by Buganda officials, who see the initiative as a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted connection between cultural heritage and national development.
