Uganda is set to host a landmark event that will reinforce its leadership in Africa’s science, technology, and engineering sectors.
From September 14 to 20, 2025, the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and the 9th African Engineering Conference will be held at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo.
This high-level gathering will attract engineers, scientists, innovators, policymakers, researchers, and students from across Africa and beyond.
The theme of the event is “Leveraging Engineering Innovations and Technology to Accelerate Africa’s Socio-Economic Transformation.”
It is being organized in partnership by the Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat in the Office of the President (STI-OP), the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), UNESCO, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), and the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO).
The conference is viewed as a major milestone in Uganda’s industrialization and innovation agenda.
Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza, the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, has confirmed Uganda’s readiness to host the event.
She stated that engineering is the backbone of any serious STI ecosystem.
Dr. Musenero noted that engineering is essential to Uganda’s ambition of growing its GDP ten-fold to USD 500 billion by 2040.
She emphasized that the conference offers a strategic opportunity to showcase how engineering innovations are addressing Africa’s challenges and unlocking new opportunities.
“Engineering is the engine that drives progress,” she said. “Through this conference, Uganda is giving visibility to the engineers and innovators shaping Africa’s future.” “This is a resounding signal to all potential partners—regional and international—that Uganda is ready to lead, ready to collaborate, and ready to innovate.”
The week-long event will feature scientific presentations, keynote speeches by global thought leaders, breakout sessions, and hands-on workshops.
At the core of the program will be a High-Level Ministerial Forum aimed at developing coordinated science and innovation policies across Africa.
A public exhibition will run alongside the conference.
This exhibition will highlight Uganda’s achievements in electric mobility, artificial intelligence, materials engineering, electronics manufacturing, and value addition to natural resources.
It will also serve as a platform for technology demonstration, investment engagement, and market linkages.
The exhibition is expected to elevate Uganda’s engineering profile on the global stage.
Dr. Musenero urged engineers, innovators, students, and policymakers to embrace the opportunity to craft homegrown solutions.
“We must co-create tools and technologies that work for our people,” she said. “Not imported templates, but African-led ideas that are scalable, inclusive, and transformational.”
The Secretariat encouraged Ugandans from all walks of life—especially policymakers and university students—to attend the event.
It called on the public to “turn up, connect, learn, and contribute to what promises to be a landmark gathering of minds and ideas powering Africa’s progress.”
Engineering and science are at the heart of Uganda’s Vision 2040.
STI is being prioritized as a key engine for national growth.
The upcoming conference is expected to energize Uganda’s innovation landscape.
It will further position the country as a key player in shaping Africa’s technological future.
