Members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from the Buganda region have convened for a high-level meeting focused on reconciliation and strengthening party unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The meeting, held on September 4, 2025, at Hotel Africana in Kampala, was chaired by the newly elected NRM Buganda Vice Chairman, Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune.
In his remarks, Kasolo explained that the gathering was meant to bring together NRM flag bearers, their rivals from the recently concluded primaries, and district chairpersons from across Buganda.
“Today’s meeting brings together NRM flag bearers, their rivals from the recently concluded NRM primaries and district chairpersons from across Buganda region to heal the internal rifts that could have emerged from the recently concluded primaries and this meeting is meant to foster unity amidst the victors and the losers,” Kasolo said.
He emphasized the importance of reconciliation, noting that the NRM must revitalize its support in Buganda if it is to secure victory in 2026.
Kasolo revealed that the party’s main objective is to rally support for its national chairman and presidential flag bearer, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, under the slogan “Museveni for Buganda.”
Attorney General Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka also attended the meeting and addressed grievances raised by some members.
He provided legal guidance and urged party members to use dialogue as a means of resolving disputes in order to preserve cohesion within the party.
“The NRM’s strength lies in its unity. Where there are grievances, let us resolve them through open discussion and respect for our structures. That is how we will keep the party strong in Buganda,” Kiwanuka said.
The meeting was seen as a critical step toward consolidating the NRM’s base in Buganda, a region where the opposition has enjoyed dominance in past elections.
Leaders at the gathering called for collective effort, reconciliation, and strategic planning to ensure that the party enters the 2026 elections united and stronger.
