By Fredrick Siminyu
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has in his Easter message to the country emphasized the detrimental impact of corruption on the nation’s development agenda and commended religious leaders for their vocal condemnation of corruption, urging them to continue combating this vice.
The president labeled the corrupt as parasites that hinder the progress of Uganda’s transformation efforts and expressed his satisfaction with the religious leaders’ effort in the fight against corruption.
He highlighted the importance of utilizing anti-corruption structures, such as Local Councils, as key tools in the fight against corruption. However, he noted with concern that these structures are not being fully utilized to address corruption effectively.
Addressing the issue of accountability, President Museveni called upon voters to hold elected officials accountable for their actions, particularly in cases of corruption.
He emphasized the role of citizens in ensuring transparency and integrity within governance structures.
“Part of the problem is that this anti-corruption weapon is not used. If the elected people have become corrupt, why don’t the voters hold them accountable? The religious leaders could take an interest in this,” he said.
