Uganda’s education sector is set to receive a significant boost as China has pledged to offer more scholarships and support to help Ugandan youth access educational opportunities in China.
This announcement was on August 1, 2024 made by Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, during the launch of the Friendship, Culture, and Unity Day at Seeta High School-Mbalala campus in Mukono district.
Ambassador Lizhong emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Africa, including Uganda, in three key areas: industrial development, agricultural modernization, and education.
He highlighted the upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September, which will discuss collaborations between China and African countries for the next three years.
“We expect to work very closely with Uganda in all fields and take this good opportunity to deepen our friendship, including the cooperation in the fields of education and the youth,” Lizhong said.
He encouraged more Ugandan youths to take advantage of the educational opportunities in China.
This expanded support builds upon China’s existing initiatives in Ugandan education.
In 2019, China offered 99 scholarships for Ugandan students to study in higher institutions in China, covering various expenses.
Over the past three years, the Chinese government has also provided 1,200 short-term training opportunities and 250 scholarships to Ugandan students.
