President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed his commitment to honoring Uganda’s liberation heroes, pledging support to the family of the late Lt. Gen. Bazilio Olara-Okello, a former UNLA commander.
During a meeting with the family at State House, Entebbe, on August 7th, 2024, Museveni reflected on his encounters with the late military commander and the significant role he played in shaping Uganda’s destiny.
The family, led by Dan Kidega, Beatrice Olara Ataro (widow), and Florence Apoko Olara (daughter), expressed gratitude for Museveni’s continued support.
Beatrice Olara Ataro invited the President to visit their home next year, as they plan to honor her late husband’s legacy.
She acknowledged Museveni’s dedication to honoring the country’s history and those who contributed to its freedom.
Museveni promised further assistance to Olara-Okello’s family, ensuring their well-being and honoring the legacy of a man who played a vital role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
The family acknowledged the honor and assistance provided by the UPDF, which helped cover significant costs and ensured a dignified farewell.
“We thank you for the help you offered to our mother and the Acholi people when our father’s body was returned. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces received us with honor at the airport and provided a respectable burial,” Apoko noted.
The late Bazilio Olara-Okello was a Ugandan military officer and one of the commanders of the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), which, together with the Tanzanian army, overthrew Idi Amin in 1979.
Museveni’s pledge to support Bazilio Olara-Okello’s family underscores his commitment to recognizing and honoring the contributions of Uganda’s liberation heroes.
