Lango Paramount Chief’s Coronation: A Showcase of Rich Heritage and Global Connections

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will be the Guest of Honor at the coronation of Eng Dr Michael Moses Odongo Okune as the Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci) of the Lango Cultural Institution on November 2nd, 2024, at Mayor’s Garden in Lira City, Lango sub-region, Northern Uganda.
The event promises to showcase the Lango tribe’s vibrant culture, unlocking tourism and investment opportunities and putting the tribe on the global map.
Under the guidance of the owitong (clan chiefs), the Lango Cultural Institution is working tirelessly to ensure a successful and memorable ceremony.
The coronation will be a spectacular display of Lango tradition, art, and culture, offering a unique experience for local and international guests to connect with the tribe’s history and customs.
With over 2.5 million people, the Lango tribe is set to share its story, traditions, and hospitality with the world, fostering greater understanding, cooperation, and exchange.
Twenty African kings, including Kyabazinga of Busoga, Rwot David Acana Il of Kerkwaro Acholi, Emor Emor of Teso, Won Ateker Papa Me Kumam His Royal Highness Raphael Otaya, King Oyoo of Toro, King Peter of Majesty Kingdom, and Raila Amolo Odinga of Kenya, have confirmed their attendance.
Former American President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, as well as the King of Nigeria and South Sudan, are also expected to attend.
Okello Oyoo said the coronation would magnify the relationship of the Lango cultural institution with other institutions from other parts of the world.
Okello Oyoo assured the members of the public that nothing would be an obstacle to the coronation.
A total of 2.8 billion shillings is expected to be raised for the colorful coronation.
Atek Okwerodot I Ur clan head Okullu Okeng Patrick encouraged the Lango community in the diaspora to have confidence that no small disgruntled group would interfere with the coronation of Won Nyaci elect Dr. Moses Michael Okune on November 2, 2024.
Eng Dr Okune’s coronation marks a significant milestone in the tribe’s history, leveraging his family’s connections and experience to drive anti-poverty initiatives and promote development.
As the son of former Minister William Okune, Eng Dr Okune is well-positioned to tap into government resources and programs aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting economic growth.
George Ojwang-Opota, head of the Odyek Onywal Iceng clan, noted, “…his ability to engage with the NRM government, coupled with his understanding of the tribe’s challenges, makes him an ideal leader to drive positive change in the region…”.
The Lango Cultural Institution has unveiled a stunning new set of regalia, featuring diverse designs and colors tailored for various ceremonies.
According to Peter Okello Oyo, chairperson of the Regalia Sub Committee, “…the diverse designs and colors signify the unity and diversity of the tribe, promoting a sense of belonging and pride among community members…”.
The four sets of uniforms, each with different purposes, will officially be used starting on the coronation day.
The uniforms include a black gown for burials, grey for council meetings, cream for cabinet members, and blue for the judicial arm of the council.
Eng Dr Okune commended the clan leaders for their steadfast thinking and ideas, stating, “…we are laying a new firm foundation for Lango cultural revival which will stand the test of time…”.
