Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has unveiled plans to construct a network of roads connecting Arua in the West Nile to the Central African Republic’s southeastern corner.
This ambitious project aims to strengthen trade and bilateral relations between the two landlocked countries.
The project will involve collaboration with Congo and South Sudan to build roads from Arua, through Congo’s Isiro and Obbo in CAR.
“Together with CAR, we want to persuade the governments of Congo and South Sudan that we work on the roads from Arua to Isiro and then to Obbo,” Museveni explained.
Additionally, Museveni proposed constructing a road through Yei, Maridi, and Yambio in South Sudan to connect the East Africa Community to CAR and beyond.
While no specific construction commencement dates or costs were announced, Museveni emphasized the importance of these roads in diversifying markets and reducing dependence on foreign markets.
To further enhance trade connections, Museveni encouraged air links between Uganda and CAR.
“I invite our air cargo companies and the Uganda Airlines to look at the possibility of flying to Bangui,” he suggested.
The President highlighted the potential for inter-regional market linkages through the East Africa Community’s connection to CAR.
“Love Africa because you need it for your prosperity. We need Africa for the bigger market,” he emphasized.
Museveni also reaffirmed his commitment to completing the 332km Standard Gauge Railway from Malaba to Kampala.
Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadéra praised Museveni’s “pan-African spirit” and “leading development” in Uganda since 1986
