Gachagua Steps Down: Kenya’s Deputy President Resigns Amid Impeachment Controversy
By The Public Lens
Kenya’s Deputy President, G. Rigathi Gachagua, submitted his resignation to President William Ruto on October 16, 2024, just hours before facing impeachment proceedings in the Senate.
Gachagua’s decision was reportedly made “not in defeat but with a heavy heart and clear mind.”
He expressed concerns over the fairness of the impeachment trial, labeling it a “kangaroo court” where he wouldn’t receive justice.
Additionally, Gachagua criticized the High Court’s ruling allowing the impeachment trial to proceed, stating it “confirmed my worst fears” and that “the law has been twisted.”
Gachagua fears that continuing with the trial would risk him being barred from holding public office for life “without cause.”
The former Deputy President vows to continue his fight, albeit through alternative means, with his sights set on 2027.
Gachagua also hinted at exposing wrongdoing within President Ruto’s government in due time.
