President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s recent visit to Ankole sub-region was more than just a meeting with local leaders – it was a call to action. The President emphasized the importance of wealth creation in developing the country, shifting away from reliance on infrastructure projects.
“What we are focusing on now is understanding why such conflicts occur,” President Museveni said, highlighting the challenges faced by developing countries, including wars in neighboring nations.
Leading a nation, he argued, requires proper diagnosis, much like a medical approach. “Leading our country is like being a doctor. If you do not diagnose the right disease and provide the corresponding treatment, there’s a problem.”
The President reflected on the 1960s, recalling the four key priorities of development: wealth, skills, jobs, and infrastructure. However, he urged leaders to focus more on wealth generation, citing his own experience as an example.
“In 1968, I started with cows in Rubaya and later bought land in Rwakitura. I was looking for wealth, not just development.” He also shared success stories of individuals who transformed their lives through modest investments in businesses.
President Museveni emphasized the need for collective action to overhaul Uganda’s economy sustainably. “I urge you to prioritize wealth creation over irrelevant politics. The promotion of jobs, skills, and wealth informs our national progress.”
The President also addressed concerns about land fragmentation, agricultural challenges, and infrastructure development. He requested support for a government irrigation program and encouraged the youth to pursue careers in science and technology.
Vice President Jessica Alupo lauded the President’s dedication to transforming Uganda, highlighting the country’s remarkable economic progress. “The economy has grown tenfold, Ugandans are better educated, and access to services has significantly improved.”
Local leaders, including Hon. Basil Bataringaya Rwankwene and Hon. Annet Katusiime Mugisha, presented memoranda to the President, commending his efforts and highlighting critical projects requiring attention.
As President Museveni concluded his visit, it was clear that his call to action was not just a rhetoric, but a blueprint for unlocking Ankole’s economic potential.
