President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday, July 21, hosted the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, H.E. Qu Dongyu, for a strategic meeting focused on transforming Uganda’s agricultural landscape.
The high-level engagement took place at State House, Entebbe, and brought together senior officials from both the Government of Uganda and the FAO.
Welcoming the FAO delegation, President Museveni reiterated Uganda’s deep-rooted commitment to advancing agriculture as the cornerstone of the nation’s socio-economic transformation.
He acknowledged the critical support that FAO has consistently offered in helping Uganda develop resilient and modern agri-food systems.
“The transformation of agriculture remains our priority because it directly impacts income security, food security, nutrition, and the well-being of our people,” President Museveni told the delegation.
Discussions during the meeting revolved around strengthening cooperation in several priority sectors, including sustainable agriculture, food security, improved nutrition, and public hygiene.
President Museveni emphasized that these sectors are integral components of Uganda’s broader development framework and national planning.
He gave assurances to H.E. Qu Dongyu that the Ugandan government will continue to provide full support to FAO’s operations in the country.
He specifically highlighted government-backed programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and wealth creation initiatives that are aimed at uplifting rural communities.
In response, the FAO Director-General praised Uganda’s determined efforts in reforming and expanding its agricultural sector.
He reiterated the organization’s commitment to working closely with Uganda to offer both technical expertise and strategic guidance in accelerating investment in agriculture.
“Uganda has significant potential for rapid agricultural growth and sustainable development,” H.E. Qu Dongyu remarked, acknowledging Uganda’s focused approach to strengthening food system resilience.
The visiting FAO delegation included Mr. Maximo Torero, the organization’s Chief Economist; Mr. Abebe Haile Gabriel, FAO Assistant Director-General and Africa Representative; Ms. Lineo Molise, Regional Coordinator for Africa; and Mr. Shen Hong, Assistant to the Director-General.
The meeting underscored the mutual resolve between Uganda and FAO to deepen cooperation that will drive agricultural innovation, sustainability, and improved livelihoods for millions of Ugandans.
