President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has allocated an additional Shs 2 billion to aid in the ongoing restoration of the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Uganda’s most revered cultural treasures.
The funds were officially handed over on behalf of the President by his senior advisor, Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso, during a ceremony attended by key members of the Buganda Kingdom, including Prince David Kintu Wasajja, Princess Victoria Nkinzi, Princess Namikka, Minister Choltilda Nakate of Buganda’s Ministry of Culture, and Buganda Kingdom’s Protocol Chief, Owek. Kaddu Kiberu.
Gen. Nalweyiso emphasized the national significance of the Kasubi Tombs and the government’s commitment to ensuring their full restoration and preservation.
“The President understands the importance of the Kasubi Tombs, not only to Buganda but to Uganda as a whole,” Gen. Nalweyiso stated. “He is dedicated to supporting the complete restoration and long-term preservation of all royal heritage sites in the region.”
In her remarks, Minister Choltilda Nakate expressed her appreciation for the government’s continued financial support. She assured those present that the kingdom remains committed to safeguarding its royal heritage sites.
“This support is not only a vital boost to our restoration efforts but also a clear acknowledgment of the role that culture plays in our national development,” Minister Nakate remarked. “The kingdom will ensure these sites are maintained with the utmost dignity and pride.”
The event also featured cultural blessings and a guided tour of the restoration works, where local artisans and heritage experts are diligently working to rebuild the tombs. The restoration is being carried out using traditional materials and craftsmanship in an effort to preserve the site’s cultural authenticity.
This new Shs 2 billion funding is part of Uganda’s broader national efforts to promote cultural tourism and heritage conservation, both of which are key pillars in the country’s strategy to revitalize its tourism industry.
The Kasubi Tombs, which were severely damaged by a fire in March 2010, serve as the burial site for four former Kabakas (Kings) of Buganda.
The ongoing restoration project involves collaboration between the Buganda Kingdom, the Government of Uganda, UNESCO, and various international partners, with the goal of rebuilding the tombs to their former glory using traditional methods.
