Tragic Loss of a Ugandan Athletics Icon: Rebecca Cheptegei’s Untimely Death

Rebecca Cheptegei, a renowned Ugandan Olympian, has tragically passed away at a Kenyan hospital due to severe burns sustained from a petrol attack by her boyfriend.
The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed deep sadness and condolences, condemning the act of domestic violence that led to her untimely death.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a nation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” reads a message from the Uganda Athletics Federation.
Cheptegei had been admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, where she received treatment for her severe burns before succumbing to her injuries.
Prior to her death, the Uganda Sports Federation had planned to airlift Cheptegei to Nairobi for better medical treatments, but unfortunately, her condition worsened, leading to her tragic passing.
Cheptegei was a talented and accomplished athlete, having competed professionally since 2010, with notable achievements including finishing 15th in the 1500 meters at the 38th IAAF World cross-country Championship in Poland.
Her most recent achievement was placing 44th in this year’s Women’s Marathon in Paris, showcasing her dedication and passion for athletics.
The Ugandan athletics community and beyond will deeply miss Rebecca Cheptegei, and her tragic death serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
