The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has formally presented more than two million signatures to the Electoral Commission (EC) in support of President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination as the party’s flagbearer for the 2026 general elections.
The handover took place on Friday at the EC headquarters in Kampala, where the party’s Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, led senior officials and a jubilant crowd of leaders and supporters in a lively procession.
“We have handed in more than two million signatures, and this is confirmation of the votes President Museveni is going to have. Already, we have deposited our votes with the Electoral Commission,” Todwong declared, underscoring his confidence in the President’s nationwide backing.
The Secretary General said the overwhelming show of support was a clear reflection of the NRM’s organizational strength across the country.
He predicted that the mobilization would translate into overwhelming victories for both President Museveni and other NRM candidates in the 2026 elections.
Party leaders described the submission as more than a legal requirement, framing it instead as a symbolic act that demonstrated the loyalty of NRM supporters and their determination to defend the political gains achieved under the party’s leadership.
According to the Electoral Commission, every presidential aspirant is required to gather at least 100 signatures from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s 146 districts, which is equivalent to 98 districts.
The NRM’s delivery of over two million signatures marks a significant early milestone in its campaign preparations.
The Commission has scheduled presidential nominations for September 23 and 24, setting the stage for the official start of the 2026 election season.
