President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized the need for Ugandans to adopt modern farming strategies to create wealth.

Addressing the first regional parliamentary plenary sitting in Gulu City, President Museveni advised farmers to shift from traditional crops like tea, cotton, and sugarcane, which take long to mature.

“There is a need to focus on critical areas, and specifically on enhancing homestead incomes. Go and mobilize our people to grow coffee, fruits, cassava, poultry, piggery, and fish farming,” President Museveni said.

He advocated for the four-acre model approach, which can successfully accommodate modern farming of fruits, dairy, poultry, and coffee productions.

President Museveni noted that old cash crops require large-scale production to generate significant profits, a challenge for most rural farmers.

“Few rural farmers can grow tea, cotton, and sugarcane on a large scale, so let’s focus on modern farming that can bring quick returns,” he added.

He also called on MPs to abandon old politics marked by sectarianism, corruption, and individualism.

“Let’s adopt the principles of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, which entail responsibility, discipline, ideology, and realism in budgeting,” President Museveni urged.

The President also emphasized the importance of explaining the benefits of growing certain food crops to local people in a mathematical and understandable manner.

“Leaders and technocrats should always endeavor to mathematically explain to the local people the benefits of growing certain food crops,” he said.

The regional parliamentary sitting in Gulu City, where President Museveni made these remarks, will conclude on Friday, August 30th, 2024.
