Fifteen people aboard a taxi from Busia town heading to Kampala died
this morning following an accident at imanyiro village along the
Mayuge – Musita road in Mayuge district.
According to residents who stay close to the road where the accident
occurred, it was at around 5:30 AM when they were awakened by a big
bang.
One of the residents who immediately responded and rushed to the
accident site, Waiswa Atisa, says the taxi must have somersaulted
several times before resting back to a standing position with almost
everyone aboard dead.
“On reaching the site with other residents, we found that the taxi was
standing still with mangled dead bodies inside and blood oozing out of
the wreckage.
Mayuge District Police Commander, Bashir Siriba, says this taxi of
registration number UBD 089A rammed into a packed sugarcane lorry
registration number UWP 616 which had had been left ill packed,
though, on the left side of the road overnight possibly after
developing a mechanical fault.
Siriba attributes the accident to the possibility moments before
occurrence of the fateful accident, the driver was over speeding with
deemed headlamps then he suddenly rammed into the packed lorry loaded
with sugarcane.
He cautioned road users against overspending along this road which is
still under construction and identified the dead as Ibrahim Damare
the driver and a resident of Namayingo district, the taxi conductor,
twelve other adults, one child and one Peron who was rushed to
Buluba hospital under critical condition.
By press time, Mayuge District Police Commander, Bashi Siriba could
identified only nine of those dead as Ibrahim Damore of Busia,
Nabirye Zaina of Bulesa in Bugiri district, Christine Were of
Namutumba town, Christine Night Mugere of Busia, Michael Barasa Pamba
of Busia, Michael Musinguzi of Kawempe, Ongudiran Andeny, Prime
Kansimwe and Patrick Misumba.
The National President of Nakazade Ugaada Nedala Lyayo Patriçk
Mudhungu however blamed the cause of the accident on the fact that the
Chinese company which was contracted to construct the road started on
the road works without first appeasing the Busoga ancestral spiritual
powers that govern this area.
Nakazade Ugaada Nedala Lyayo is a sect of traditional healers and
herbalists with members in all parts of the country.
According to Mudhungu, unless the ancestors are taken care of, more
accidents claiming lives of people will continue along this entire
Musita – Lumino/Busia – Majanji road.
