Uganda’s fight against COVID-19 is paying off if official statistics from the Ministry of Health is anything to go by.
As of June28, 2020, Uganda’s total COVID-19 recoveries stood at 808 while active cases on admission are 190.
In a statement a press statement released today, Dr. Henry G. Mwebesa, the Director General Health Services at Ministry of Health said 11 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed from samples tested on 28 June 2020.
“All confirmed cases are Ugandans,” Mwebesa said, adding that the total COVID-19 cases stand at 870.
Four of the 11 confirmed cases are among samples tested on Points of Entry while seven are among contacts and alerts. The Ministry also revealed that 34 truck drivers tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday and were handed over to their respective countries.
To-date, no COVID-19 related death has been recorded in Uganda.
“Similarly, the Ministry is cognizant that there is a higher number of active cases on admission vis-a-vie confirmed cases. This is largely due to the fact that there are a number of non-nationals (truck drivers and refugees) who are receiving treatment for COVID-19. The foreigners were admitted into care as we prepare for their repatriation, and once settled in the heath facility, they chose to complete their treatment in Uganda as opposed to repatriation to their respective countries,” the Ministry said.
Among the non-nationals include Sudanese, Rwandans, South Sudanese, Congolese, Kenyans, Tanzanians and Burundian refugees among others.
The Ministry also revealed health facilities treating foreigners and these include Mulago National Specialized Hospital, Arua, Lira, Gulu, Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale Regional Referral Hospitals.
“It is important to note that the Ministry of Health, only reports Ugandan nationals who are confirmed cases. However, active cases on admission and COVID-19 recoveries that are reported also include foreigners,” the Ministry added.
