In a shocking turn of events, a Court Clerk attached to the Namayingo Chief Magistrate’s Court has been apprehended for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Shs500,000 from a relative of a suspect who has been on remand for nine months.
Caroline Ajambo, the accused Court Clerk, was arrested on July 23, 2024, by the Inspectorate of Government, a body responsible for investigating and preventing corruption in Uganda.
According to the statement issued by the Inspectorate of Government, Ajambo was caught red-handed soliciting the bribe from the suspect’s relatives in exchange for facilitating bail.
The suspect, who has been incarcerated for nine months, was allegedly promised bail in exchange for the payment.
Ajambo was not alone in her illicit activities. An intern, Arthur Munyororo, was also arrested for allegedly participating in negotiating the bribe with the suspect’s relatives.
The duo’s actions are a clear violation of the law and the ethical standards expected of court officials.
The arrest of Ajambo and Munyororo sends a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in the judicial system.
The Inspectorate of Government has pledged to continue monitoring and investigating corrupt activities within the courts to ensure that justice is served fairly and without prejudice.
The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the judicial system and the need for increased vigilance to prevent corruption. The public has been urged to report any suspicious activities or corruption to the relevant authorities.
Ajambo and Munyororo are currently in custody and face charges of soliciting a bribe and corruption.
If found guilty, they could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and dismissal from their positions.
The arrest serves as a reminder that corruption has no place in the judicial system and that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
